    In the year 2000, Dr Mackay was funded by the RACS to work with Professor Ara Darzi (now Lord Darzi of Denham), in his department at Imperial College, London. The post was funded by the Lumley Research Fellowship, which is a reciprocal RACS/RCSEng research fellowship.

    Major accomplishments during the time at Imperial were:

    • research for MD thesis
    • co-writing the departmental proposal for the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, which was awarded to Imperial in 2001 for Professor Darzi’s department
    • securing Smith and Nephew Foundation funding to appoint Professor Charles Vincent as Director of the Clinical Safety Research Unit in Professor Darzi’s department
